Tuckey Carbon Project 1

Project Information:

Tuckey Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 25 kilometres southeast of Boorowa, within the Hilltops Council region of New South Wales. Registered in August 2024, the project covers an area of 185.66 hectares. The project is situated in the South West Slopes region, an area traditionally utilised for mixed farming operations, including sheep and cattle grazing as well as dryland cropping.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method requires the proponent to undertake physical soil sampling, typically drilling cores to a depth of one metre, to establish a baseline of Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) stocks. Following this, specific management activities are implemented to encourage carbon sequestration. For this specific project, activities include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, rejuvenating pastures through seeding or cropping, introducing legumes, and altering grazing intensity or duration to improve soil vegetation cover.

Environmentally, the Boorowa region experiences a temperate climate with a long-term average rainfall of approximately 600mm to 800mm, which is often winter-dominant. The landscape is characterized by undulating hills with soil types that typically include Red Chromosols (also known as red-brown earths) and Yellow Podzolic soils. These soils are generally favorable for agriculture but can require careful management to maintain structure and fertility, which aligns with the project's goal of improving soil health. The project is managed by Agriprove, a major Australian developer known for partnering with landholders to implement soil carbon projects using these measurement-based methodologies.
