Yo Yo Park Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Yo Yo Park Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 40km south of Augathella in the Murweh Shire of South West Queensland. It was registered in August 2024 and covers an expansive 25,085 hectares.

Soil carbon projects operating under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models (2021) methodology involve introducing new land management activities to increase the amount of carbon stored in agricultural soils. For this methodology, standard requirements include taking baseline soil samples to a depth of at least 30cm, and subsequently conducting sampling rounds every 1 to 5 years to verify the increase in soil carbon.

The Augathella region is widely known for large-scale beef cattle farming and grazing operations. The local environment typically experiences semi-arid rainfall conditions. The soils across the project area are a diverse mix, featuring soft black soils on semi-open downs, alongside developed brigalow scrub soils and creek flood-out country that has been seeded with buffel grass.

This project aims to increase carbon in the soil within the agricultural system by altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of cattle grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health. The property itself is highly developed for beef production and has historically advertised a carrying capacity of around 5,500 backgrounders or breeder equivalents. In an interesting piece of local history, the property is situated on the South Branch of Yo Yo Creek; according to folklore, the creek was named because its water levels tend to rapidly rise and fall, or "yo-yo" swiftly, after rain. Additionally, in December 2025, the participant's name was officially updated from APAC Natural Capital Pty Ltd to a dedicated special purpose vehicle, APAC YoYo Park Pty Ltd.
