Kemp Carbon Project 1

Project Information:

Kemp Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 10km northwest of Tabulam, roughly 55km east of Tenterfield in northern New South Wales. It was registered on November 10, 2024, and covers an area of 134.68 hectares.

Soil carbon projects aim to increase the amount of carbon stored within agricultural soils by adopting new or materially different land management practices. Under the 2021 Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration methodology, carbon abatement is estimated through rigorous physical soil sampling and modelling. To build soil carbon, this project alters the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of livestock grazing to promote ground vegetation cover and overall soil health. The project also applies synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address soil material deficiencies, alongside re-establishing, rejuvenating, and permanently maintaining pastures on cropland or previously bare fallow.

The Northern Rivers and Tenterfield region is well known for extensive agricultural operations, particularly cattle and sheep grazing on native and improved pastures. The local environment is characterised by a cool temperate climate with reliable, moderate-to-high rainfall averaging over 850mm annually. The region features soils such as Dermosols and texture contrast soils like Kurosols and Chromosols, which can exhibit topsoil fertility constraints that directly benefit from the nutrient applications and pasture seeding strategies outlined in the project's activities.

The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions Co No.2 Pty Ltd, a corporate entity tied to Agriprove, which is one of Australia's largest developers of soil carbon projects. By actively addressing soil deficiencies and optimising grazing intensity, Kemp Carbon Project 1 demonstrates how targeted agricultural management can rehabilitate farming land, improve soil resilience against drought, and successfully generate carbon credits.
