Kemp Carbon Project 1

Project Information:

Kemp Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 10km northwest of the rural village of Tabulam in northern New South Wales. Situated within the Tenterfield Shire, the project lies roughly 60km east of Tenterfield and inland from the Northern Rivers coast. The project was registered in November 2024 and covers an area of roughly 135 hectares.

The Tabulam region is historically dominated by beef cattle grazing and agriculture, supported by the Clarence River system. The area is classified as having a warm temperate to subtropical transitional climate with relatively high rainfall, averaging over 1,000mm annually. The local terrain typically features undulating hills with soils ranging from alluvial loams near watercourses to sandy loams and clay soils (Chromosols and Dermosols) on the ridges, which are generally suitable for the pasture improvements outlined in the project design.

Operated by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent soil carbon project developer, this initiative utilizes the 2021 "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" methodology. This method allows landholders to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by increasing soil carbon stocks through specific management activities. For the Kemp project, these activities include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to correct nutrient deficiencies, re-establishing pastures via seeding, and altering grazing intensity to promote vegetation cover. The project likely employs Agriprove's model of baseline soil core measurement followed by digital monitoring to quantify carbon gains over time.
