Carbon Project 2 - MRF

Carbon Project 2 - MRF is a plantation forestry project located midway between Holbrook and Tumbarumba in the Greater Hume region of southern NSW, approximately 36km east of Holbrook. It was registered in August 2024 and covers an area of 280.58 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects under the avoided conversion sub-method involve sequestering carbon by ensuring an existing or recently harvested plantation forest is not cleared to make way for non-forested land. Standard requirements mandate the establishment and maintenance of the plantation for commercial wood harvesting, meeting specific tree stocking densities, and committing to a permanence period (such as 25 years) to guarantee the carbon remains stored.

The Greater Hume area is well known for agriculture, livestock grazing, and extensive commercial softwood plantations. The area is considered to have high rainfall (often exceeding 900mm annually) and features soils that generally include alluvial clays and redoxic hydrosols, which provide excellent conditions for timber growth.

Interestingly, this region is a major hub for Australia's timber industry and its pine plantations were severely impacted during the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires, making the ongoing retention and replanting of forestry assets crucial for the local economy. Additionally, registry records indicate the project underwent a variation of proponent on September 8, 2025, transferring from The Trust Company (PTAL) Limited as trustee for ANZFOF2 Sub 1 to Murray River Forests PTY LTD.
