Project Information:
AA2025R_BlackHillsP_S1S3 is a Plantation Forestry carbon project located in the locality of Black Hills, approximately 15 kilometers northwest of New Norfolk in Tasmania's Derwent Valley. Registered in August 2024, the project covers 456.38 hectares. The "AA" in the project name and the involvement of SFM Environmental Solutions identify this as part of the "ActivAcre" program, an initiative that partners with Tasmanian landowners to establish commercial timber plantations on underutilized farmland.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. It utilizes two specific activities: establishing a new plantation forest (Schedule 1) and avoiding the conversion of an existing plantation to non-forested land (Schedule 3). This dual approach allows the project to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by sequestering carbon in trees intended for commercial harvest, while ensuring the land remains under forest cover rather than reverting to agriculture. Standard requirements for such projects include maintaining specific stocking densities and adhering to a permanent management plan that balances harvest cycles with long-term carbon storage.
The Derwent Valley region is characterized by a cool temperate climate with reliable rainfall, making it a premier district for both forestry and agriculture. The local landscape typically features loamy to clay soils that support vigorous eucalypt and pine growth. Land use in the immediate vicinity of Black Hills is a mix of native forest harvesting, plantation forestry, and grazing, aligning well with the project's goal of integrating timber production into existing farming landscapes.
An interesting aspect of this project is its likely structure under the ActivAcre model, where SFM Environmental Solutions leases land from farmers to manage the plantation assets. This allows landowners to diversify their income through "carbon forestry" without losing ownership of their property, effectively turning lower-value grazing paddocks into productive timber and carbon assets.
