Project Information:
AA2025R_BlackHillsP_S1S3 is a Plantation Forestry project located at Black Hills, 12km north of New Norfolk in Tasmania. It was registered in August 2024 and covers 456.38 ha.
Plantation forestry projects involve generating carbon credits by establishing new plantation forests, converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation forests, or avoiding the conversion of existing plantations to non-forested land. This methodology requires managing the plantation for the commercial harvesting of wood products while sequestering carbon over the long term.
The Black Hills and wider Derwent Valley area is known for agriculture such as sheep and cattle grazing, orcharding, hop growing, and forestry operations. The area is considered one of Tasmania's driest catchments with low rainfall creating unique challenges for dryland pastures. Soils in the region are generally fertile and derived from weathered Permian sedimentary rocks, Jurassic dolerite, and basalt.
This project sequesters carbon by establishing and maintaining a new plantation forest for commercial harvesting. It also avoids the conversion of an existing or recently harvested plantation to non-forested land by ensuring it remains a continuous plantation. As an interesting note, this site is part of a broader carbon portfolio managed by The Trust Company (Australia) Limited as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust, supported by SFM Environmental Solutions Pty Ltd as the project agent, and has a nominated permanence period of 25 years.
