Project Information:

AA2024R_WoodsdaleP_S3 is a Plantation Forestry project located in the rural locality of Woodsdale, Tasmania. The site is situated approximately 35 kilometers southeast of the historic township of Oatlands and roughly 60 kilometers northeast of Hobart. Registered on July 15, 2024, the project covers a registered area of 158.28 hectares. The surrounding region of the Southern Midlands and the Glamorgan Spring Bay interface is characterized by a mixed landscape of dry sclerophyll forest, grazing pastures for sheep and cattle, and scattered commercial timber plantations.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, this project implements an "avoided conversion" activity. This differs from typical tree-planting projects; instead of establishing new forest, the project maintains an existing plantation that was legally permitted and viable to be converted into non-forest land (such as agricultural pasture) following harvest. By committing to re-establish and maintain the plantation instead of clearing it, the project generates credits for the carbon stocks that are preserved in the landscape.

Environmentally, the Woodsdale area experiences a cool temperate climate with moderate annual rainfall, typically ranging between 600mm and 800mm, which supports viable forestry operations without the high intensity of the wet west coast. The local terrain often features texture-contrast soils (Chromosols) and Dermosols, which typically present as sandy loams over clay subsoils. These soils are generally suitable for Pinus radiata (radiata pine) or Eucalyptus nitens (shining gum), the most common commercial species in the region.

The project is managed by SFM Environmental Solutions, a prominent Tasmanian forest manager, on behalf of The Trust Company (Australia) Limited (acting as trustee). The project name prefix "AA" and the manager's profile suggest this may be part of the ActivAcre program, an initiative that partners institutional investment with local landowners to manage timber and carbon assets.
