Project Information:

Lenah2024R_Cilfa_S2 is a plantation forestry project located in the Southern Midlands region of Tasmania, approximately 40km north of Hobart. It was registered in July 2024 and covers 222.03ha, with additional areas added through a project variation in May 2026.

Plantation forestry projects under this methodology involve establishing new native or timber plantations, avoiding the conversion of plantations to non-forested land, or transitioning existing forests to different rotation schedules. This specific project sequesters carbon by converting an existing short-rotation plantation forest to a long-rotation plantation forest. By extending the growth period before a commercial harvest for wood products, the trees remain in the ground longer, storing a greater amount of carbon than they would under a frequent short-cycle harvesting schedule.

The Southern Midlands area is known for dryland grazing pastures (particularly sheep and cattle) and commercial forestry operations. The area sits in a regional rain shadow, resulting in a cool, low-rainfall climate of roughly 450–500mm annually. The soils in this region are generally texture-contrasting Chromosols over sandstone, alongside structurally solid Dermosols on elevated, hilly ground.

The land is owned by the proponent, Lenah Estate Pty Ltd, with on-ground operations managed by SFM Environmental Solutions Pty Ltd. Interestingly, portions of the historic Jefferys Track, a regional mixed-use 4WD and community trail, pass directly through the pine and eucalypt plantations on Lenah Estate. SFM Environmental Solutions actively manages the estate to balance commercial timber harvesting with surrounding environmental and community access considerations.
