Australian Bluegum Plantations (ABP) Plantation Forestry Carbon Project #1

Project Information:

Australian Bluegum Plantations (ABP) Plantation Forestry Carbon Project #1 is a plantation forestry project located in the Glenelg and Southern Grampians local government areas, stretching inland from the coastal town of Portland in south-western Victoria. It was registered in August 2024 and covers 1,566.97 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects generate carbon credits by establishing new plantations, converting short-rotation forests to long-rotation forests, or avoiding the conversion of existing plantations to non-forested land. This specific project sequesters carbon by establishing a new commercial plantation for harvesting wood products, while also preventing the conversion of an existing or recently harvested plantation forest.

The surrounding Green Triangle region is well known for its extensive commercial forestry operations, as well as sheep, beef, and dairy farming. The area benefits from good, reliable rainfall perfectly suited for bluegum growth, and the soils vary from the fertile Western Victorian Volcanic Plains to coastal sandy loams.

This project is managed by Australian Bluegum Plantations Pty Limited, with Climate Friendly Pty Ltd acting as the project agent. As one of the largest plantation managers and woodchip exporters in the world, Australian Bluegum Plantations integrating carbon farming into their commercial model ensures they can maintain their vast forestry estates while continuing to provide local employment pathways and community programs, such as their Young Leaders Program for students across the region.
