Restoring Murray Woodlands 030 Biodiversity and Carbon Project

Project Information:
Restoring Murray Woodlands 030 Biodiversity and Carbon Project is a permanent environmental planting project located in the Greater Hume Shire of New South Wales, approximately 35km north of Corowa and 45km northwest of Albury. Registered in June 2024, the project covers 7.83 hectares of land previously used for agricultural purposes. It is managed by E.H. Heinjus & Co. Pty. Limited, a family farming entity likely engaging in the region's mixed cropping and grazing operations.
This project was established under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust's (BCT) "Restoring Murray Woodlands" tender, a specialized initiative designed to combine carbon credits with biodiversity conservation. The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings (FullCAM) methodology, which involves establishing native trees and shrubs, such as Box Gum and Inland Grey Box, at densities sufficient to achieve forest cover (typically at least 200 stems per hectare). The plantings are permanent and designed to create vital habitat corridors for threatened species like the Squirrel Glider and Superb Parrot, connecting fragmented remnants of native woodland.
The surrounding Riverina region is characterized by a temperate climate with a winter-dominant rainfall pattern, averaging approximately 600mm to 680mm annually. The local landscape features flat to gently undulating plains with soils predominantly classified as Chromosols (texture-contrast soils) and Dermosols, which are well-suited to the region's extensive cereal cropping and livestock grazing industries. As part of the BCT cohort, this project generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) while simultaneously receiving annual conservation payments to maintain the biodiversity values of the site in perpetuity.
