Project Information:

FPC 2024 CP3 is a Plantation Forestry project situated across multiple distinct sites in the South West and Great Southern regions of Western Australia. The project covers approximately 1,084 hectares, with land parcels dispersed near the forestry-rich townships of Nannup, Boyup Brook, and the Frankland River area. Registered on October 9, 2024, the project operates within a landscape heavily utilized for commercial timber production, mixed cropping, and grazing.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. This methodology allows for carbon abatement through commercial forestry activities. Specifically, this project engages in two key activities: establishing new plantation forests on land that has not supported forest for at least seven years, and converting existing short-rotation plantations, typically harvested quickly for woodchips, into long-rotation forests suitable for structural sawlogs. This conversion extends the lifespan of the trees, significantly increasing the average carbon stock held within the forest estate over time.

Environmentally, the project areas fall within a high rainfall zone characterized by a Mediterranean climate, experiencing wet winters and dry summers. The soils in this region are typically ancient, weathered lateritic gravels and sandy loams, which provide well-drained foundations essential for the rapid growth of softwood species such as Pinus radiata (Radiata Pine) or Pinus pinaster (Maritime Pine). The proponent, the Forest Products Commission (FPC), is the Western Australian government's trading enterprise, suggesting that this project is part of a broader state strategy to bolster the softwood timber supply while simultaneously generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
