Project Information:
AA2024R_NixonL_S3 is a Plantation Forestry project located approximately 7km south of George Town in northern Tasmania. Registered on June 27, 2024, the project covers a relatively small area of 32.88 hectares situated near the Bell Bay industrial zone and the East Tamar Highway. The region is characterized by a mix of heavy industrial land use, commercial forestry, and grazing agriculture.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, specifically utilizing the "Avoided Conversion" activity (Schedule 3). This methodology credits carbon abatement generated by maintaining an existing plantation forest that was legally and economically viable to be converted into non-forested land, such as pasture for cropping or grazing. By committing to continue the plantation cycle (harvesting and replanting) rather than clearing the land for agriculture, the project generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) based on the avoided emissions and stored carbon.
Environmentally, the George Town and Tamar Valley region experiences a temperate maritime climate with moderate rainfall, typically averaging between 700mm and 900mm annually. The local terrain supports commercial timber production, with soils generally consisting of Dermosols (clay loams) and Sodosols, which are common in the undulating forestry landscapes of the East Tamar.
The project is managed by SFM Environmental Solutions, a prominent Tasmanian forest manager, on behalf of The Trust Company (Australia) Limited (acting as trustee for The Tasmanian Carbon Afforestation Sub-Trust). The project naming convention (AA2024R_NixonL_S3) suggests it is part of an aggregated portfolio, likely the "ActivAcre" program run by SFM, where "S3" denotes the Schedule 3 avoided conversion activity and "NixonL" likely identifies the specific property or landowner.
