Western Treefarm Project phase 2 (WTP2)

Project Information:
Western Treefarm Project phase 2 (WTP2) is a plantation forestry project located in the Boyup Brook and West Arthur local government areas, situated approximately 80km southeast of Bunbury in the South West region of Western Australia. Registered on June 5, 2024, the project initially covered an area of 477.34 hectares, with a variation on July 23, 2025, that added further land to the project area boundaries.
Plantation forestry projects under the 2022 methodology determination sequester carbon by establishing and maintaining new plantation forests intended for the commercial harvesting of wood products. Standard requirements for these projects involve using specific, high-quality seed stock matched to local conditions and maintaining sufficient stocking densities to ensure adequate canopy cover, maximum wood fibre output, and high-integrity carbon abatement.
The surrounding South West region is predominantly used for commercial timber forestry, sheep and cattle grazing, and broadacre agriculture. The environment experiences a Mediterranean climate typically classified by moderate to high winter rainfall. Soils in this area generally consist of lateritic gravels, loamy soils, and sandy loams over clay, which are highly suitable for establishing commercial timber plantations.
The project's proponent, Mitsui & Co. Wood Resources Oceania Pty Ltd, manages this site as part of a broader sequence of Western Treefarm Projects in the state. In addition to commercial timber and carbon sequestration, the proponent notes that these plantation projects deliver essential co-benefits, such as reducing soil salinity, improving land productivity, and establishing environmental plantings to foster habitat connectivity and support native wildlife.
