Project Information:

Western Treefarm Project phase 2 (WTP2) is a plantation forestry project located in the South West region of Western Australia, spanning an area approximately 15 to 45km northeast of Boyup Brook. It was registered in June 2024 and initially covers an area of 477.34 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects operating under the 2022 Methodology Determination involve establishing, managing, and maintaining new or converted plantation forests. In this specific project, the methodology requires establishing a new plantation forest intended for the commercial harvesting of wood products, sequestering carbon both in the growing trees and the harvested wood over the project's lifetime.

The Boyup Brook and West Arthur regions are historically known for mixed agriculture, including sheep and cattle grazing, broadacre cropping, and significant commercial timber and forestry operations. The environment is classified as a high rainfall zone with a typical Mediterranean climate. The local soils across the Darling Plateau predominantly consist of lateritic ironstone gravels, sandy loams, and yellow earth in the broader valleys.

The proponent, Mitsui & Co. Wood Resources Oceania Pty Ltd, is a major player in the Australian forestry and woodchip export supply chain, managing sustainable plantations to deliver carbon solutions. The parent company has a strong footprint in Oceania's natural-based carbon sequestration efforts. An interesting note for this project is that on July 23, 2025, a project variation was officially logged to add new land areas to the existing project boundaries.
