Yopies Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Yopies Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located in the rural locality of Greta South near Hansonville, approximately 25 kilometers southeast of the regional center of Benalla, Victoria. Registered on October 4, 2024, the project covers a significant agricultural holding of 777.69 hectares. The region is part of the Ovens Murray district, an area well-regarded for mixed farming and grazing due to its proximity to the Victorian Alps foothills.

The project proponent, Yopies Pty Ltd, is an established agricultural operator in the district known for beef cattle grazing. Public livestock listings indicate the entity manages grass-fed Angus and Belmont Red cattle operations on properties along Soldiers Lane and Grahams Lane, directly corresponding to the project's coordinates. The landscape in this part of North East Victoria typically features Red and Brown Chromosols (loams over clay) and Sodosols. These soils are generally productive but can require management for acidity and nutrient levels; the local climate is temperate with reliable rainfall, often exceeding 600mm annually, which supports improved pastures.

Operating under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, the project aims to sequester carbon by introducing new management activities. Specifically, this project involves applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material soil deficiencies. By correcting these nutrient gaps, the project aims to boost pasture productivity and root mass, thereby increasing Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) stocks over the 25-year crediting period. The project is managed in collaboration with Carbon Link Operations, a leading service provider in the Australian soil carbon sector.
