Project Information:

AA2024R_HarveyL_S2 is a Plantation Forestry carbon project located approximately 8 kilometers east of Sheffield in the productive North West region of Tasmania. Registered in May 2024, the project covers a specific area of 21.57 hectares, situated among the rolling hills and agricultural mosaics typical of the Kentish Council municipality. The region is characterized by a cool-temperate climate with high annual rainfall (often exceeding 1,000mm) and fertile red basaltic soils (ferrosols), making it a prime location for both intensive cropping and forestry operations.

The project operates under the Plantation Forestry Methodology Determination 2022, specifically utilising "Schedule 2" activities. This involves converting an existing short-rotation plantation, typically harvested quickly for low-value woodchips or pulp, into a long-rotation plantation managed for high-value sawlogs and structural timber. By extending the growth cycle of the trees (often by 10 years or more) and performing silvicultural thinning, the forest sequesters significantly more carbon over its lifetime than it would under the original short-rotation regime.

Managed by SFM Environmental Solutions, a specialist Tasmanian forestry asset manager, the project appears to be part of an aggregation vehicle (likely the "ActivAcre" program) backed by institutional investment through The Trust Company (Australia) Limited. The "AA" in the project title likely refers to this aggregation portfolio, while "HarveyL" typically identifies the specific landholder or property involved. This structure allows smaller forestry blocks on private farms to access the carbon market, providing landowners with a diversified income stream while encouraging the production of high-quality timber products.
