Tumut Landfill Gas Project
ERF192228
Project Information:
Tumut Landfill Gas Project is a landfill gas capture project located in Tumut, New South Wales, approximately 116km southeast of Wagga Wagga and 186km west of Canberra. It was registered by the proponent, LGI Limited, in March 2024, though the exact project area size is not publicly specified.
Landfill gas projects under the 2015 methodology determination involve installing a gas collection system to capture and combust methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, typically requiring the flaring of the gas or its use to generate electricity. This specific project actively captures gas generated at the local landfill from both legacy and non-legacy waste.
The Tumut area is situated on the north-west foothills of the Snowy Mountains and is well known for forestry operations, particularly large pine plantations, as well as beef cattle grazing. The environment is considered temperate with a relatively high average annual rainfall of around 790mm to 930mm. Soils in the Tumut region are predominantly Chromosols and Euchrozems, which are dark red, well-structured clayey soils that successfully support the region's productive agricultural and forestry uses.
Since its registration, the Tumut Landfill Gas Project has consistently demonstrated ongoing emissions abatement and has been issued a total of 16,017 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to date.
