Bonnington Soil Carbon Project Allynbrook (Revoked)

Project Information:
The Bonnington Soil Carbon Project Allynbrook (Revoked) was a soil carbon project located at Allynbrook, a rural locality approximately 25km north of Dungog in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. Registered in June 2024, the project covered a registered area of approximately 160 hectares. The project was managed by Carbon Fix Pty Limited, a proponent that specialises in aggregating smaller landholdings and operating in high-rainfall zones to maximise sequestration potential.
The project operated under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits abatement generated by measuring increases in soil organic carbon stocks over time. To achieve this, the project activities involved altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing. By optimising how livestock interact with the land, such as using time-controlled grazing or reducing density, the project aimed to maintain better vegetation cover, reduce soil compaction, and ultimately build soil carbon levels.
The Allynbrook region is situated in the foothills of the Barrington Tops and is characterised by a high-rainfall climate, typically receiving over 900mm annually, which is conducive to rapid pasture growth and soil carbon accumulation. The local landscape is dominated by cattle grazing and lifestyle farming, with soils generally consisting of alluvial loams along the Allyn River flats and texture-contrast soils (Chromosols) on the surrounding slopes.
Despite the favourable environmental conditions, the project was voluntarily revoked in June 2025, just under a year after its registration. The revocation was enacted under Section 30 of the CFI Rule, which indicates the project proponent voluntarily withdrew the project, a decision that can occur due to property sales, changes in land management strategy, or an assessment of commercial viability.
