Seven Hills Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Seven Hills Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located near Mullion Creek, approximately 25km north of Orange in the Central Tablelands region of New South Wales. Registered in March 2024 by Carbon Fix Pty Limited, the project originally covered 1,048 hectares, though a variation in February 2025 removed specific areas from the project boundary. The region is well-regarded for its agricultural productivity, supporting land uses such as sheep and cattle grazing as well as broadacre cropping.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon (Measurement and Models) methodology. This framework requires the proponent to baseline soil carbon levels through physical sampling before implementing new management activities designed to sequester carbon. In this case, the project focuses on altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing to improve vegetation cover and soil health. By optimizing how livestock interact with the landscape, the project aims to increase the amount of organic carbon stored in the soil profile.

Environmentally, the Mullion Creek area experiences a temperate climate with distinct seasons. Rainfall is moderate, typically averaging between 600mm and 800mm annually, which supports reliable pasture growth. The soils in the wider Cabonne and Central Tablelands region are often characterized as Chromosols or Dermosols, generally fertile loam to clay-loam soils that are well-suited to the project's grazing activities, though they can vary locally towards volcanic origins given the proximity to Mount Canobolas.
