Gemma Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:
Gemma Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located approximately 40km northeast of Narrandera in the Riverina region of New South Wales. It was registered in February 2024 and covers an area of 1,402.80 hectares.
Soil carbon projects operating under the "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" methodology involve adopting new agricultural management activities to build soil organic carbon. The resulting sequestration is then calculated through a combination of direct soil sampling measurements and modeling techniques. For this specific project, the management activity involves applying nutrients to the land, using synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers, to address material soil deficiencies, which promotes biomass growth and increases carbon storage in the soil profile.
The Narrandera area sits within the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and the broader Riverina region, which is well known for mixed farming, broadacre cropping, and grazing. The regional environment is considered semi-arid, experiencing moderate rainfall of around 445mm annually. Soils across this agricultural landscape predominantly consist of red-brown earths, transitional red-brown earths, and various clay soils such as hard-setting and self-mulching clays.
An interesting note regarding this project is that it underwent a variation in October 2025, which resulted in certain areas being removed from the original project boundaries. The project is managed by Loam Carbon Pty Ltd, an active proponent and developer of agricultural soil carbon projects across Australia.
