Landari Camden 2024

Project Information:

Landari Camden 2024 is a plantation forestry project located in the rural locality of Camden, Tasmania, approximately 30 kilometers east of the major city of Launceston. Registered on November 1, 2024, the project covers a targeted area of 44.88 hectares. The region surrounding Camden and the nearby Mount Barrow is characterized by a mix of forestry operations and grazing land, utilizing the cool-temperate climate and steep, fertile terrain that defines North East Tasmania.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, specifically focusing on "avoided conversion." This activity involves retaining an existing plantation forest (often Pinus radiata or Eucalyptus nitens) that was scheduled to be cleared and converted into non-forested land, such as pasture for livestock grazing. By maintaining the trees instead of clearing them for agriculture, the project avoids the release of carbon stored in the biomass and soil, generating Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) based on the emissions prevented.

The environment in this part of Tasmania is conducive to high-biomass forestry, classified as a high-rainfall zone (typically exceeding 1,000mm annually). The soils in the Camden plateau and surrounding North East highlands are often fertile Ferrosols (derived from basalt) or soils formed on dolerite, which support rapid tree growth and high stocking densities. The proponent, Landari Pty Ltd, is a specialized forestry management firm based in Armidale, NSW, with a track record of managing similar carbon aggregation projects across Tasmania and the mainland.
