Myong NFMR Project
ERF191252
Project Information:
The Myong NFMR Project is a native forest regeneration project located in the Maranoa region of Queensland, approximately 85km north-northwest of St George and 65km west of Surat. Registered on March 15, 2024, the project covers a substantial area of 4,488.90 hectares. The project operates on land historically used for pastoral grazing, specifically sheep and cattle, which is the dominant land use in this semi-arid region.
The project utilizes the Native Forest from Managed Regrowth (NFMR) methodology. This method is designed for land that has been comprehensively cleared in the past for pastoral purposes. The primary activity involves ceasing mechanical or chemical clearing and managing grazing pressure to allow native vegetation to regenerate from in-situ seed sources, such as rootstock and lignotubers. Unlike tree planting projects, this approach relies on the natural resilience of the landscape to restore forest cover once suppression activities (like heavy grazing or chaining) are removed.
Environmentally, the Maranoa and Balonne regions typically experience a semi-arid climate with an annual rainfall averaging around 500mm. The landscape likely consists of red earth (Kandosols) or cracking clay (Vertosols) plains, supporting vegetation communities such as Poplar Box woodlands, Mulga, or Cypress Pine. These soil and climate conditions are well-suited for natural regeneration when grazing pressure is timed and controlled effectively.
The project proponent, Pastoral Partners Australia (PPA), is an investment vehicle backed by the New Zealand infrastructure investor Morrison. PPA has been actively acquiring properties in the St George district to implement a model of "sustainable protein farming," which integrates carbon sequestration with productive grazing. Notably, the project registry indicates that the project was "divided under section 77A of the CFI Act" on March 31, 2024, only two weeks after registration. This administrative variation typically signifies that the original project area has been split into separate parts, potentially to align with different management zones or property titles.
