Alston Carbon Project 2

Project Information:

Alston Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Moira Shire, approximately 6km northwest of the town of Yarrawonga, Victoria. Registered on October 28, 2024, the project covers an area of roughly 133 hectares. The site sits within the productive agricultural region along the Murray River, often associated with grazing and cropping operations.

This project operates under the "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" (2021) methodology. This method focuses on increasing the stock of carbon in the soil through changes in land management practices. Specifically, the Alston Carbon Project 2 aims to improve soil health by applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address material nutrient deficiencies. By correcting these deficiencies, the project seeks to boost plant growth and root biomass, which in turn draws more carbon from the atmosphere and stores it in the soil profile.

The Yarrawonga region experiences a temperate to semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 480mm. The landscape is characterized by flat to undulating plains with soils that typically include red-brown earths and clays (Vertosols), which are well-suited to irrigated and dryland agriculture but can benefit significantly from nutrient management to maximize carbon retention. The proponent, AgriProve Solutions, is a leading developer in this sector, managing numerous similar projects designed to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by verifying soil carbon increases over time.
