Sunset Valley NFMR Project

Project Information:

Sunset Valley NFMR Project is a Native Forest from Managed Regrowth project located approximately 35km northwest of the town of Bollon in South West Queensland. It was registered in March 2024 and covers a project area of 5,350.87 ha.

Native Forest from Managed Regrowth projects involve allowing native vegetation to regenerate into a permanent forest by stopping activities that traditionally suppress its growth. This standardly requires ceasing the mechanical or chemical destruction of regrowth, and carefully managing the timing and extent of livestock grazing to allow for natural plant regeneration.

The Bollon region is primarily known for pastoralism and broadacre grazing operations, specifically for cattle, sheep, and rangeland goats. The area is classified as semi-arid with a low average annual rainfall of around 450mm to 465mm, and soils often feature sandy loams and red earths derived from underlying sandstone.

This project establishes permanent native forests through assisted regeneration from in-situ seed sources, including rootstock and lignotubers, on land that was previously subject to comprehensive clearing for pastoral use. The proponent, Pastoral Partners Australia, operates the wider 10,973-hectare Sunset Valley property. They actively integrate the carbon farming project alongside their ongoing grazing operations to concurrently boost agricultural productivity, sequester carbon, and enrich local biodiversity.
