Project Information:

Piyura 2023 Project is a plantation forestry project located in the Waratah-Wynyard local government area, approximately 30km southwest of the major port city of Burnie, Tasmania. Registered in October 2024, the project covers roughly 130 hectares of land in a region renowned for its high rainfall and fertile red basalt soils (Ferrosols). These environmental conditions are ideal for both intensive forestry and agriculture, with the surrounding landscape dominated by Eucalyptus nitens plantations and grazing properties.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, specifically utilising the "avoided conversion" activity. This classification indicates that the plantation forest was at risk of being cleared and converted into non-forested land (such as pasture for dairy or beef farming) but will instead be maintained as a plantation. By continuing the rotation of harvest and replanting rather than permanently clearing the trees, the project prevents the release of stored carbon and generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).

The proponent, The Trust Company (Australia) Limited, acts as the trustee for the Tasmanian Forest Operating Sub Trust, which is the investment vehicle for Forico, Tasmania's largest private forest manager. Forico manages a vast estate of over 170,000 hectares and is a recognised leader in "Natural Capital" reporting and sustainability. A notable detail is the project's name, "Piyura," which is the palawa kani (Tasmanian Aboriginal language) word for the Tasmanian Nativehen (Tribonyx mortierii), a flightless bird endemic to the island. This naming convention reflects Forico's broader commitment to recognising Cultural heritage across its estate.
