Essex MMV Soil Carbon Project
ERF188120
Project Information:
Essex MMV Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located at 'Essex', a grazing property approximately 30km south-east of Tieri and 40km west of Middlemount in the Central Highlands of Queensland. Registered in December 2024, the project covers 566 hectares of agricultural land. The region is a hub for beef cattle production and coal mining, characterized by the sub-tropical, semi-arid climate typical of the Fitzroy Basin.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits landholders for increasing soil organic carbon stocks through changes in land management. In this instance, the proponent, Peter Quinn, is implementing pasture rejuvenation through seeding and the introduction of legume species. These activities are designed to fix nitrogen and increase biomass, which in turn improves soil health and sequestered carbon levels while supporting livestock productivity.
The 'Essex' property is well-known in the Australian cattle industry. The Quinn family, trading as Essex Grazing Co, are prominent producers who were named the Most Successful Exhibitor in the Commercial Cattle Championship at Beef2024. The area typically features cracking clay soils (Vertosols) and Brigalow scrub soils, which are highly fertile and capable of significant carbon storage when managed effectively with deep-rooted pasture species.
