Little Forest Plantation Schedule 1

Project Information:

Little Forest Plantation Schedule 1 is a Plantation Forestry project located near the rural locality of Woodstock, approximately 25 kilometers east of Cowra in the Central West region of New South Wales. Registered in January 2024, the project covers a substantial area of 531 hectares on land traditionally used for mixed farming and grazing. The "Schedule 1" designation specifically indicates that this is a new plantation established on land that has been clear of forest cover for at least seven years, distinguishing it from projects that convert or maintain existing plantations.

The Woodstock and Wyangala region is characterized by its undulating granite country and red earth soils, supporting a mix of sheep grazing, cattle, and cropping. The area typically receives moderate rainfall (around 600-700mm annually), which is suitable for commercial timber species such as Pinus radiata. Under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, the project generates credits by sequestering carbon in the growing trees as well as in the long-term harvested wood products. Unlike environmental plantings which are permanent, this method allows for commercial harvest while accounting for the carbon stored over the project's lifetime.

The project is managed by proponent Robert Miles with the assistance of The Carbon Farming Foundation (CFF). CFF is known for providing a "do-it-yourself" service model that simplifies the registration and management process for landholders, often aggregating smaller or medium-sized projects. Notably, the project area was expanded in September 2024, suggesting a phased approach to the plantation's establishment.
