ALDI Food Waste Diversion Project

Project Information:
ALDI Food Waste Diversion Project is a Source Separated Organic Waste project operating nationwide across Australia. Because this is an aggregated project tracking waste across ALDI's extensive network of supermarkets and distribution centres, it does not have a single project area size, specific coordinates, or a nearest major town. It was registered in September 2023. Rather than traditional agricultural land use, the land use for this project spans urban and peri-urban commercial retail environments, alongside industrial waste management and processing zones.
Source Separated Organic Waste projects involve diverting eligible organic matter from the general mixed solid waste stream. Instead of sending this organic waste to a landfill where it would break down anaerobically and release methane, standard methodology requirements dictate that it must be sent to an eligible waste treatment facility. For this project, the diverted waste is processed using enclosed composting technology.
Because this project operates on a national scale across hundreds of ALDI locations, it spans highly diverse environmental conditions, ranging from high rainfall coastal cities to semi-arid inland towns. However, local soil types and rainfall classifications are largely irrelevant to the carbon abatement process itself, as the actual processing environment for the diverted waste is artificially maintained within enclosed, controlled composting facilities.
A highly notable feature of this project is its formal inclusion of charity diversion activities alongside its new and expanded waste diversion efforts. Run in partnership with the proponent, Corporate Carbon Advisory Pty Ltd, this ensures that edible surplus food is purposefully redirected to local food charities. This model prevents harmful methane emissions at the landfill while simultaneously providing community relief. Recent registry updates show this nationwide initiative has already successfully been issued 628 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
