HPUT Carbon Project Schedule 1

Project Information:

HPUT Carbon Project Schedule 1 is a plantation forestry project located near the locality of Stonehenge, approximately 25km southeast of the historic town of Oatlands in Tasmania's Southern Midlands. Registered in November 2023, the project covers a substantial area of 2,142 hectares within the Eastern Tiers region. This area is traditionally utilized for mixed agricultural purposes, primarily extensive grazing and forestry operations, supported by the undulating topography and native eucalypt bushland.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. This methodology credits carbon sequestered in trees and wood products from commercial plantations. Specifically, this project engages in two key activities: establishing new plantation forests on land that was previously cleared (such as pasture) and converting existing short-rotation plantations (typically harvested for woodchip) into long-rotation plantations (harvested for sawlogs). This conversion allows trees to grow for longer periods, storing more carbon on average over the project's life while still yielding commercial timber.

Environmentally, the Southern Midlands and Eastern Tiers region experiences a cool temperate climate. Rainfall in this specific locality is generally moderate, estimated between 800mm and 1000mm annually, which is sufficient to support commercial timber species like Pinus radiata or Eucalyptus nitens. The soils in the area are typically derived from a mix of dolerite and Triassic sandstone, often manifesting as texture-contrast soils with sandy loam topsoils overlying clay subsoils, or fertile dolerite clays on the slopes.

A notable aspect of this project is its scale and management structure. It has been cited in industry reports, such as those by the University of Tasmania, as a significant example of new plantation establishment in the state. In May 2025, the project proponent changed from "Eastern Tiers Pty Ltd" to "Fife AMI 2303 Inglewood Road Pty Limited," a transition that suggests a shift from local landholding to a more formalized institutional investment structure. The project is managed with the assistance of The Carbon Farming Foundation.
