Project Information:
Plantation Pine Products Australia - Plantation Forestry Project PPP3 is a commercial plantation forestry project located approximately 25km west of Oberon in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales. Registered in December 2023, the project covers a substantial area of 606 hectares. The site sits within a region heavily utilized for both grazing and forestry, positioned south of Bathurst near the village of Rockley.
This project operates under the 2022 Plantation Forestry methodology, specifically focusing on the establishment of a new plantation forest (Schedule 1). Unlike environmental plantings designed solely for conservation, this methodology involves planting trees, typically softwoods like Radiata Pine in this region, intended for commercial harvest. The project generates carbon credits by sequestering carbon in the growing trees, accounting for the long-term storage in wood products after harvest, while strictly adhering to rules preventing the conversion of native forests or high-value agricultural land.
The Oberon region is widely recognized as the heart of the softwood timber industry in New South Wales, supported by a cool temperate climate and high average rainfall that is ideal for pine growth. The landscape typically features rolling hills with soils derived from granite and basalt, often classified as loams or red clays, which provide the drainage and fertility necessary for productive timber plantations.
A notable aspect of this project is its successful participation in the Australian Government's "Support Plantation Establishment" program. Public records indicate that Plantation Pine Products Australia Pty Ltd secured over $1.2 million in grant funding to support the establishment of these 606 hectares of softwood plantation, highlighting the project's dual role in contributing to both the carbon market and the domestic timber supply chain.
