Wandalong Biodiverse Reforestation Project

Project Information:
The Wandalong Biodiverse Reforestation Project is a significant environmental planting initiative located in the Northern Agricultural Region of Western Australia. Geographically, the project is situated approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Northampton and east of the locality of Binnu. It sits within the "Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor," a strategic ecological zone designed to reconnect remnant vegetation across the landscape. Registered in July 2023, the project covers a substantial area of 4,503 hectares.
The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology, which involves establishing permanent native vegetation on land previously cleared for agriculture. In this specific case, the project aims to transform degraded farming land, often characterized by sandy soils and low productivity, into a thriving habitat. The planting strategy includes a mix of native tree and shrub species, including mallee eucalypts, designed to replicate the natural woodland that existed prior to clearing. These plantings are legally protected for 100 years.
Environmentally, the region experiences a semi-arid Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The area is historically known for broadacre cropping (wheat and canola) and sheep grazing; however, marginal areas in this region often suffer from wind erosion and salinity, making them ideal candidates for carbon farming. A notable feature of this project is its specific goal to link the Mallee Nature Reserve and the Wandana Nature Reserve, creating a vital wildlife corridor for threatened species such as the Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo and Malleefowl. The project was developed by Carbon Neutral Pty Ltd (now operating under the Wandalong Carbon Pty Ltd entity for this project), a prominent developer known for its large-scale restoration work in the corridor.
