Queensland Zero Emissions Heavy Haulage Project

Project Information:

The Queensland Zero Emissions Heavy Haulage Project is a transport emissions reduction project located in the industrial hubs of Brisbane, Queensland, approximately 15km northeast of the Brisbane CBD near the Port of Brisbane. Registered in December 2023, the project is operated by Clover Hill Logistics Pty Ltd, a logistics company based in Fortitude Valley.

This project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Land and Sea Transport) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology generates carbon credits by calculating the reduction in emissions intensity achieved when vehicles switch from fossil fuels to lower-emission energy sources or improve efficiency. Specifically, Clover Hill Logistics is converting existing heavy-duty diesel trucks into electric vehicles (EVs).

The Brisbane coastal region is characterized by a subtropical climate with high rainfall, particularly in summer. The local geography features low-lying alluvial plains and clay soils typical of the Brisbane River delta, where the heavy haulage operations, such as transporting bulk construction materials, take place.

A key feature of this project is its partnership with Australian technology company Janus Electric. Unlike standard fixed-battery EVs, Clover Hill Logistics utilizes a "swappable" battery system, allowing converted prime movers (such as a Western Star tipper used in trials for Holcim) to replace depleted batteries in minutes rather than waiting hours to charge. The project has received support from the Queensland Government's Ignite Ideas Fund to commercialize this "EcoHaul" fleet, with plans to expand to ten zero-emission trucks.
