Project Information:

Landari Mangalore 2022 is a plantation forestry project located in the rural locality of Mangalore, approximately 30 kilometers north of Hobart in Tasmania. Registered on August 15, 2023, the project covers 117.74 hectares of land situated between the townships of Brighton and Bagdad. The surrounding region is characterized by a mix of agricultural land uses, predominantly grazing and mixed farming, interspersed with rural residential properties.

This project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it involves the "Establishment of a new plantation forest" (Schedule 1), which requires planting trees on land that has not supported a plantation or native forest for at least seven years prior. Unlike permanent environmental plantings, this methodology allows for commercial harvesting, meaning the trees are grown for wood products while sequestering carbon during their growth cycles.

Environmentally, the Mangalore region experiences a cool temperate climate with moderate rainfall, averaging around 650mm annually. The local landscape typically sits within the Derwent Valley survey area, where soils are often derived from Permian mudstone and Triassic sandstone, occasionally presenting as Podosols or Tenosols depending on the specific topography. These conditions differ from the high-rainfall basalt zones found elsewhere in the state but are sufficient to support viable farm forestry when managed correctly.

An interesting aspect of this project is its proponent, Landari Pty Ltd, a developer that often works on biodiversity and carbon offsets. While many carbon projects focus solely on permanent conservation, this project demonstrates the integration of carbon finance with commercial timber production, creating a dual revenue stream from carbon credits (ACCUs) and future wood products.
