Project Information:

Wyong Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a landfill gas electricity generation project located at the Buttonderry Waste Management Facility in Jilliby, approximately 10km northwest of Wyong in New South Wales. Registered in June 2023, the project is operated by LMS Energy Pty Ltd and focuses on upgrading an existing gas collection system to improve capture efficiency and generation capacity.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology rewards project developers for capturing methane, a potent greenhouse gas released by decomposing organic waste, and combusting it to generate renewable electricity. As an "upgrade" project, it specifically credits the additional abatement achieved by installing new infrastructure or enhancing the existing system beyond what would have occurred under the previous operational baseline.

The facility sits within the Central Coast region, an area characterized by a mix of semi-rural acreages, state forests, and urban development. The region typically experiences high rainfall, averaging over 1,100mm annually, and the landscape features soils largely derived from sedimentary rock, often consisting of clay and sandy loams.

LMS Energy, a leading bioenergy company in Australia, manages the site's bioenergy facility. By converting the captured methane into electricity, the project not only reduces emissions but also exports renewable power to the local grid, capable of powering thousands of homes. The site is a key asset in the Central Coast Council’s waste management strategy, combining waste disposal with resource recovery and energy production.
