Wyong Landfill Gas Upgrade Project (Revoked)
ERF183958
Project Information:
Wyong Landfill Gas Upgrade Project (Revoked) is a landfill gas electricity generation project located in the Central Coast region of New South Wales, approximately 5km south-east of the town of Wyong. It was registered in June 2023 by LMS Energy Pty Ltd, an Australian specialist bioenergy company, and operates over an undefined facility area.
Projects operating under the Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas methodology involve upgrading or installing collection systems to capture methane gas emitted from decomposing organic waste. The standard requirement is to safely destroy this captured landfill gas by combusting it to generate renewable electricity, thereby preventing a highly potent greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere.
The Central Coast and greater Wyong area is known for mixed land uses, including coastal urban development, rural residential hobby farms, and cattle and horse grazing pastures. The region typically experiences a high rainfall coastal climate, and local soils across the broad alluvial plains are generally deep yellow and brown podzolic soils featuring loamy surfaces over heavy clay subsoils.
This project was specifically set up to upgrade an existing landfill gas collection system to capture and combust gas generated from both legacy and non-legacy waste. An interesting note is its unusually short lifespan on the carbon register; despite its recent registration, the project was officially revoked in March 2026 under section 30 of the CFI Rule.
