Weirview Carbon + Biodiversity IDR2-1472

Project Information:
Weirview Carbon + Biodiversity IDR2-1472 is an environmental planting project located in the South West Slopes region of New South Wales, approximately 5 kilometers southwest of the twin towns of Harden-Murrumburrah. Registered in June 2023, the project covers a relatively small area of 10.5 hectares on the "Weirview" property.
The project operates under the "Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings" methodology. This involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree and shrub species on land that was previously cleared for agriculture. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the planting must be managed to achieve forest cover, typically defined as reaching a height of at least 2 meters and a canopy cover of 20% within the project area.
The surrounding Hilltops Council region is a highly productive agricultural zone known for mixed farming. The landscape is dominated by dryland cropping, principally wheat and canola, and livestock grazing (sheep and cattle). The local environment is characterized by a temperate climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 600mm to 650mm. The soils in this vicinity are predominantly Red Chromosols (Red Brown Earths), which are texture-contrast soils capable of supporting both pasture and winter crops, though they can be susceptible to acidity.
A key feature of this project is its inclusion in the Australian Government's Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot (indicated by the "Carbon + Biodiversity IDR2" nomenclature). This participation means the project proponent, Julia Atkin, is undertaking specific biodiversity stewardship activities alongside carbon sequestration. The plantings likely adhere to strict protocols regarding species diversity and structural complexity to create high-quality habitat for local fauna, earning biodiversity payments in addition to standard carbon credits.
