Logie Farm Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot Project 1493

Logie Farm Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot Project 1493 is an environmental planting project located at Orielton in south-east Tasmania, approximately 10km northwest of the township of Sorell and 25km northeast of Hobart. Registered in August 2023, the project covers roughly 58 hectares of the larger 317-hectare "Logie Farm" property.

The project operates under the Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot, a specific Australian Government scheme designed to reward farmers for increasing on-farm biodiversity while sequestering carbon. The methodology involves establishing permanent plantings of mixed native tree species on land previously used for agriculture, in this case, sheep grazing. According to corporate reporting by the proponent, approximately 35,000 trees have been planted on the site. As a pilot participant, the project generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) alongside separate biodiversity stewardship payments.

The Orielton region lies within the Coal River Valley area, known for its "rain shadow" effect which creates a relatively dry climate compared to western Tasmania, with annual rainfall typically between 500mm and 600mm. The landscape is characterized by dry sclerophyll forest and grazing pastures. The soil profile at Logie Farm is heavily influenced by Jurassic dolerite, a rock type capable of producing fertile but stony clay soils; the property notably contains a dolerite quarry which is also operated by the proponent.

The project proponent is Gowing Bros Ltd (ASX: GOW), a diversified investment company that has shifted its focus from traditional retail investments to a portfolio that includes agriculture and environmental assets. Logie Farm was acquired by the company in March 2022 as part of a strategy to invest in Tasmanian agriculture and natural capital.
