Bankina Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Bankina Carbon Project is a plantation forestry project located in the Mid West region of Western Australia, approximately 100km northeast of the regional city of Geraldton. Situated within the Shires of Northampton and Chapman Valley, the project area lies in a transition zone between the traditional wheatbelt and pastoral rangelands. It was registered in May 2023 and originally covered over 3,300 hectares, though a variation in September 2025 removed specific areas from the project boundary.

This project operates under the Plantation Forestry methodology, which involves establishing new plantation forests for the purpose of commercial harvesting. By planting trees on land that was previously used for other agricultural purposes, the project generates carbon credits through the sequestration of carbon in the growing biomass and long-term storage in harvested wood products.

The region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 350mm. The landscape consists largely of sandy soils with some loamy areas, typical of the distinct "sandplain" country found in this part of the Mid West. Historically, the area has been used for broadacre cropping and grazing. Interestingly, the project proponent, Outback Carbon (managed by Mitsui E&P Australia), adopted an integrated land management strategy for this property: they retained the sandy soils for timber plantations while subdividing and selling the premium loamy agricultural parcels to neighboring farmers for cropping, ensuring the land is utilized for its most productive capability.
