Bankina Carbon Project

Project Information:

Bankina Carbon Project is a plantation forestry project located in the Shire of Chapman Valley, northeast of Geraldton in Western Australia. It was registered in May 2023 and covers an area of 3,314.62 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects involve sequestering carbon by establishing and maintaining new plantation forests, typically planted at commercial stocking densities to yield long-term commercial wood products.

The Chapman Valley region is known for dry-land cereal cropping, such as wheat and canola, alongside sheep and beef grazing. The area is considered to have a semi-arid to moderate Mediterranean climate, relying heavily on winter rainfall of approximately 440mm annually. Regional soils generally consist of fertile red loams, such as Chapman valley loam, and sandplains.

This project sequesters carbon while providing a new plantation forest specifically for commercial timber harvesting. Interestingly, the project proponent, Outback Carbon Pty Ltd, operates as an authorised representative and associated entity of Mitsui & Co. (Australia) and Mitsui E&P Australia Holdings. In September 2025, a variation was applied to the project, resulting in specific originally listed areas being removed from the project bounds.
