Bankina Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Bankina Carbon Project is a plantation forestry project located in the Mid West region of Western Australia, approximately 55km northeast of Northampton and 100km north of Geraldton. Registered in May 2023, the project originally covered a project area of 3,314 hectares within the Chapman Valley and Northampton local government areas. The region is traditionally utilized for broadacre agriculture, specifically cropping and grazing, and is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 350mm. The landscape features predominantly sandy soils with some loamy areas, typical of the Northern Agricultural Region's sandplains.

Operating under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, the project involves establishing a new plantation forest for the purpose of commercial harvesting. This methodology allows proponents to generate carbon credits by sequestering carbon in trees and wood products. Standard requirements for such projects include establishing trees on land that has been clear of forest for at least seven years and managing the plantation for commercial timber production, rather than permanent conservation.

The project is managed by Outback Carbon Pty Ltd, which has adopted a strategy of integrating carbon forestry with traditional agriculture. A notable aspect of the Bankina project is the proponent's approach to land management: after acquiring the property, they identified and sold off the high-quality loamy agricultural parcels to local farmers for continued cropping, while retaining the sandy soils for the timber plantation. This aligns with a project variation filed in September 2025, which removed specific areas from the project footprint to optimize land use.
