Bankina Carbon Project

Project Information:
Bankina Carbon Project is a Plantation Forestry project located in the Chapman Valley and Northampton local government areas, approximately 100km north-east of Geraldton in Western Australia. It was registered in May 2023 and initially covered 3,314.62 hectares, although a project variation in September 2025 saw some areas removed from the project boundaries.
Plantation forestry projects involve sequestering carbon by establishing and maintaining a new plantation forest specifically for the commercial harvesting of wood products. This methodology sets out standard requirements for managing the timber resource, ensuring adequate stocking density, and following proper forestry management practices to capture carbon while eventually yielding commercial timber.
The Chapman Valley and Northampton region is predominantly known for broadacre agriculture, particularly grain cropping (such as cereals, oilseeds, and legumes) alongside livestock grazing for sheep and cattle. The environment features a Mediterranean climate with a moderate-to-low winter-dominant annual rainfall of approximately 430-450mm. The soil types across the project's region vary from highly permeable yellow deep sands to fertile red loams (often referred to as Chapman Valley loams) and red shallow loamy duplex soils.
The project proponent, Outback Carbon Pty Ltd, is a Western Australian environmental offsets provider formed in 2006. Interestingly, the business operations of Outback Carbon are managed by Mitsui E&P Australia Pty Ltd (MEPAU), with the original founders and staff joining MEPAU's Carbon Solutions team, bringing significant corporate backing to their reforestation and land regeneration efforts.
