Hollymount Carbon Project

Project Information:

Hollymount Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located in the locality of Tannabar, approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Coonabarabran in New South Wales. Registered in June 2024, the project covers a project area of 1,741 hectares.

The region falls within the Warrumbungle Shire, an area characterized by mixed farming operations including sheep and cattle grazing as well as cereal cropping. The climate is generally temperate to semi-arid with an average annual rainfall of approximately 600mm to 750mm. Soils in the district vary from sandy loams derived from sandstone to heavier clay and basalt soils influenced by the nearby Warrumbungle volcanic complex.

This project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, specifically the "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" method. This methodology rewards landholders for increasing Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) stocks. The Hollymount project aims to achieve this by applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil, thereby boosting plant growth and organic matter returns to the earth.

An interesting historical note is that the property name "Hollymount" has been associated with the Knight family in the Coonabarabran district for nearly a century, with historical records dating back to the 1920s and 30s listing "Knight & Co" at Hollymount. This suggests the project is likely being undertaken on a long-held intergenerational family property.
