Paradise Regeneration Project

The Paradise Regeneration Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located on "Paradise Station," approximately 20km east of the small township of Jundah in Central West Queensland. Registered in September 2023, the project covers a significant area of 28,797 hectares within the Barcoo Shire. The region is situated in the remote Channel Country, roughly 220km south of the major regional hub of Longreach.

The surrounding landscape is characterized by a semi-arid climate with low, variable rainfall (averaging 250-350mm annually). The terrain typically features red earth soils and clay pans supporting native vegetation such as Mulga (Acacia aneura) and Mitchell grass. Historically, the primary land use in this area has been sheep and cattle grazing. The project proponent, Doreen Shirley Pitman, is a local pastoralist; local records indicate the Pitman family has a long-standing connection to the station.

The project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which involves changing land management practices to facilitate the regrowth of native forest. In this specific case, the project focuses on managing the timing and extent of livestock grazing to reduce suppression of young trees. By controlling grazing pressure, the project aims to allow native vegetation, likely Mulga woodlands that were previously cleared or suppressed, to regenerate into a permanent even-aged native forest, thereby sequestering carbon in the biomass.
