HPUT Carbon Project

Project Information:

HPUT Carbon Project is a plantation forestry project located in the Eastern Tiers region of Tasmania, specifically along Inglewood Road near the locality of Andover. The project area sits approximately 25 kilometers east of the regional township of Oatlands and about 60 kilometers north of Hobart. Registered in December 2023, the project covers a substantial area of 2,148 hectares.

The region surrounds the Little Swanport River catchment and is traditionally utilized for mixed grazing (sheep and cattle) and forestry operations. The landscape is characterized by a cool temperate climate with moderate rainfall, generally ranging between 600mm and 800mm annually, which supports both native dry sclerophyll forests and commercial timber plantations. The terrain typically consists of rolling hills with soils derived from Jurassic dolerite and sedimentary sandstones, common to the Southern Midlands.

This project operates under the Carbon Farming Initiative (Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it involves an "avoided conversion" activity (Schedule 2). This means the land was previously a plantation forest that, upon harvest, was at risk of being converted into non-forested land (likely for agriculture/pasture). Instead, the project proponent has committed to re-establishing and maintaining the plantation for another rotation of commercial wood products. This activity generates carbon credits by avoiding the emissions associated with clearing and converting the land, as well as sequestering carbon in the new generation of trees.

In May 2025, the project proponent structure was varied from "Eastern Tiers Pty Ltd" to a trustee entity managed by Fife Capital (Fife AMI 2303 Inglewood Road Pty Limited). This transition suggests the asset has moved from local management to an institutional investment portfolio. The project aims to sequester carbon over a 25-year permanent period while continuing sustainable timber production.
