Project Endeavour

Project Endeavour is an environmental planting project located near Lake Clifton on the Swan Coastal Plain, approximately 15 kilometers west of Waroona in Western Australia. Registered in March 2023, the project covers approximately 146 hectares of land in the Shire of Waroona. The region is historically characterized by agricultural land use, particularly grazing and mixed farming, interspersed with significant wetland systems and conservation reserves.

The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology. This involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree species on land that was previously cleared and used for agriculture for at least five years. The primary objective is to restore local vegetation communities, which sequesters carbon as the trees grow. Standard requirements for this methodology typically dictate planting at a stocking density sufficient to achieve forest cover, defined as trees reaching at least two meters in height with at least 20% crown cover.

Environmentally, the project area experiences a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The rainfall in this coastal pocket of the Peel region is generally reliable, averaging between 800mm and 900mm annually. The soils in this vicinity, situated between the coast and the Darling Scarp, are typically sandy types associated with the Spearwood or Bassendean dune systems, often requiring careful species selection to ensure survival during dry summer months.

A notable aspect of this project is its proponent, Tokyo Gas Energy Australia Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of the major Japanese gas utility. This suggests the project is likely part of a corporate offsetting strategy to manage emissions liabilities or achieve carbon neutrality goals, such as those outlined in their Climate Active certifications. The transition of the proponent name in August 2025 further indicates active corporate governance over the asset.
