Serendipity Soil Improvement Carbon Project
ERF181478
Project Information:
Serendipity Soil Improvement Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located approximately 30km southeast of Walcha in the New England region of New South Wales. Registered in June 2023, the project covers an area of roughly 883 hectares. The property is situated in the high-rainfall grazing country near Yarrowitch, a district known for its cool temperate climate and productive pasture systems.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits landholders for measurable increases in soil organic carbon (SOC). To generate credits, the project proponent must first establish a baseline of soil carbon levels through physical core sampling. Following this, land management activities, such as altering stocking rates, rotational grazing, or pasture renovation, are implemented to sequester carbon. The project credits are calculated based on the difference between the baseline and subsequent measurement rounds, accounting for the farm's emissions.
The proponent, MHPF Warrane Land Pty Ltd, is a subsidiary of MH Premium Farms (MHPF), a significant agricultural portfolio owned by Sir Michael Hintze. While the entity name references MHPF's historic "Warrane" station (which was located northwest of Armidale and recently sold for renewable energy development), the Serendipity property is a distinct, smaller aggregation acquired by MHPF in December 2020. The region is characterized by trap rock and basalt soils with an average annual rainfall often exceeding 800mm, providing favorable conditions for building soil carbon through improved biomass production. The Carbon Farming Foundation serves as the project service provider, assisting with the design and compliance of the project.
