Project Information:

ActivAcre 2023 Eucalypt Plantations 1 is a plantation forestry project located in the lush hinterland of North West Tasmania, approximately 25km south of the coastal town of Ulverstone. Registered in May 2023, the project covers a total area of 75.60 hectares near the locality of Nietta.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. This methodology credits the carbon sequestered in trees established for commercial timber harvesting. Specifically, this project involves establishing a new plantation forest on land where such forests did not previously exist (typically replacing pasture or cropping land). The trees are managed to produce wood products, with carbon abatement calculated based on the long-term storage of carbon in both the living biomass and the harvested wood products.

The Nietta and Central Coast region is renowned for its high annual rainfall and deep, fertile red basalt soils (ferrosols). These environmental conditions make it one of Tasmania's most productive agricultural zones, traditionally supporting dairy farming, potato cropping, and intense forestry operations.

A notable feature of this project is its association with the "ActivAcre" program. Managed by SFM Environmental Solutions in partnership with investment manager New Forests, ActivAcre allows farmers to lease under-utilized portions of their land for timber and carbon projects. This aggregation model creates a reliable income stream for landowners while contributing to the proponent's larger portfolio of sustainable forestry assets.
