Cohen Carbon Project 2

ERF180340

Project Information:

Cohen Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 25km southwest of Bowen in the Whitsunday Region of Queensland. Registered in April 2024, the project covers roughly 385 hectares of agricultural land situated inland from the coast.

The project operates under the "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" (2021) methodology. This requires the project proponent to conduct baseline soil sampling to measure initial carbon stocks. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the land manager must implement new or materially different farming activities, in this case, altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing, to increase soil carbon levels over time.

The Bowen and Whitsunday hinterland region is characterized by a "Dry Tropics" climate, featuring distinct wet summers and dry winters. The land use in this specific area is predominantly beef cattle grazing on rangelands. Soils in the broader Don River and Bogie River basins often consist of texture-contrast soils (Sodosols) and cracking clays (Vertosols), which have significant potential for carbon storage when managed with improved grazing techniques that maintain ground cover and reduce erosion.

Agriprove Solutions is the project proponent, a company known for its "soil carbon as a service" model which streamlines the complex baselining and reporting process for farmers. Interestingly, this project appears to be part of a larger aggregation or staged development, as a "Cohen Carbon Project 1" (ERF180216) was also registered in the same region, suggesting a multi-paddock or multi-property commitment by the landholder, likely the Cohen family.
