Rankin Carbon Project 4

Project Information:
Rankin Carbon Project 4 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Tatiara District of South Australia, approximately 25km northeast of the major regional center of Bordertown. Registered in December 2022, the project covers 193.88 hectares of agricultural land near the South Australian-Victorian border. The region, often referred to as "Good Country," is a highly productive agricultural zone known for mixed farming, particularly lucerne seed production, cereal cropping (wheat, barley), and livestock grazing.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits landholders for increasing Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) stocks. The method allows for a hybrid approach using physical soil sampling and modeled estimates to measure carbon gains over time. To achieve these gains, the project activities include correcting material nutrient deficiencies (often using non-synthetic fertilisers), retaining crop stubble, and converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices. These changes are designed to improve soil structure and microbial health, facilitating higher rates of carbon storage.
Environmentally, the Bordertown area typically experiences a Mediterranean climate with winter-dominant rainfall averaging between 450mm and 500mm annually. The soils in the Tatiara region are diverse but frequently consist of Calcarosols (calcareous sandy loams) and clay loams over clay subsoils, which are generally well-suited to the pasture improvement and regenerative cropping activities proposed by this project. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon market known for managing large portfolios of similar aggregated projects.
