Project Information:

Carbon + Biodiversity project ID 1197 (Revoked) is an environmental planting project located in the Central West region of New South Wales, approximately 20km south of the major township of Condobolin. It was registered in January 2023 and covers an area of 111.03 hectares. The region surrounding the project area is largely dedicated to agricultural pursuits, primarily broadacre dryland cropping (such as wheat and canola) and livestock grazing. The local environment is considered semi-arid with highly variable, low-to-medium rainfall averaging around 471 mm annually. The soils in this region are predominantly red and brown Chromosols, characterized by sandy loam topsoils over clay subsoils, interspersed with Vertosols, which are heavy, self-mulching cracking clays.

Environmental planting projects involve the establishment of permanent, mixed-species native trees and shrubs on land that has been predominantly clear of forest cover for at least five years prior to project commencement. The standard requirements for this methodology dictate that plantings must maintain a stocking density of at least 200 stems per hectare. The chosen species must also have the biological potential to reach two metres or more in height and achieve a minimum of 20% crown cover over the designated land.

This specific project was part of the Australian Government's Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot program, an initiative designed to incentivize landholders to integrate native plantings that yield both carbon sequestration and enhanced wildlife habitats. The proponent, Macquarie Agricultural Funds Management No.2 Pty Limited, manages over 3,700 hectares of live carbon and biodiversity projects across its operations. Their broader corporate strategy focuses on targeting non-arable or low-production areas within their farmland portfolios for environmental plantings, thereby improving ecosystem resilience and providing wildlife corridors without disrupting prime agricultural production. Despite these sustainability initiatives, this particular project was officially revoked on April 8, 2026, under section 30 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Rule 2015.
