Arndilly Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Arndilly Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located at Tullymorgan, approximately 15 kilometers northwest of Maclean in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Registered in August 2023, the project spans a significant area of 1,185 hectares. The property, known locally as "Arndilly," sits along the Broadwater of the Clarence River floodplain. The region is characterized by a sub-tropical climate with high rainfall, supporting land uses that have historically included cattle grazing and sugar cane cultivation, evidenced by the presence of cane barracks on the property titles.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits increases in soil organic carbon (SOC) achieved through new management activities. In this specific instance, the project activities focus on addressing material soil deficiencies through the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers. This approach aims to boost pasture productivity and soil health, thereby sequestering more atmospheric carbon into the soil profile. The project proponent, WPT Land Developments 2 Pty Ltd, is a subsidiary of the property fund manager Clarence Property, while the project is facilitated by the Armidale-based carbon service provider Precision Pastures.

Environmentally, the site consists of extensive floodplain wetlands and alluvial soils, which are typical of the Clarence Valley. These soils can be highly productive but may also face constraints such as acidity or waterlogging given the low-lying nature of the terrain. Interestingly, the property has been the subject of local environmental discussions; reports from the Clarence Environment Centre in 2022 noted changes in ownership and land management practices at Arndilly, highlighting the balance between agricultural development and the preservation of its significant wetland ecological values.
