Winchester Carbon Soil Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

Winchester Carbon Soil Project (Revoked) is a soil carbon project located in the Cabonne Shire region of New South Wales, approximately 20km north-east of Molong and 40km north-west of Orange. It was registered in May 2023 and covers an area of 1,729.92 hectares.

The project operated under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models (2021) methodology. Soil carbon projects involve making material changes to agricultural land management practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the agricultural system. Standard requirements for this methodology include taking baseline physical soil samples, implementing one or more eligible practice changes, and verifying carbon increases through ongoing sampling and modeling.

The Cabonne Shire region is well known for mixed farming, including livestock grazing and broadacre cropping. The Molong district features a temperate climate with medium rainfall. While soils in the broader district can range from rich clay loams to basalt-derived soils, this specific project area features acidic and nutrient-deficient soils. To sequester carbon, the project was designed to apply lime or other ameliorants to remediate the acidic soils, and apply synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material nutrient deficiencies.

Originally nominating a 25-year permanence period, the project was officially revoked on March 17, 2026, under section 30 of the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) Rule, ending its participation in the ACCU scheme. The project proponent was Kirby Carbon Co Pty Ltd, with Climate Friendly Pty Ltd acting as the project agent.
