Sinclair Carbon Project 5

Project Information:

Sinclair Carbon Project 5 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Tatiara District of South Australia, approximately 15 kilometers north of the regional service center of Bordertown. Registered in July 2024, the project covers roughly 325 hectares near the South Australian-Victorian border. The surrounding Tatiara region, often referred to as "Good Country", is a highly productive agricultural zone known for mixed farming operations, combining broadacre cropping (wheat, barley, canola) with livestock grazing (sheep and cattle).

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). Unlike vegetation methods that rely on planting trees, this methodology focuses on increasing the stock of carbon stored within the soil profile itself. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the project proponent, Agriprove Solutions, must demonstrate a measurable increase in soil carbon levels over time compared to a baseline. This is achieved through specific changes in land management; for this project, the registered activities include addressing nutrient deficiencies through fertilizer application, retaining crop stubble to protect soil structure, and converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices.

Environmentally, the site sits within a Mediterranean climate zone, typically receiving between 450mm and 500mm of annual rainfall, which is winter-dominant. The soils in the Bordertown and Upper South East area are generally characterized as clay loams or sandy loams over clay subsoils. These soil types are naturally conducive to mixed farming but can be susceptible to issues like wind erosion or acidity if over-worked. The project's shift toward no-till farming and stubble retention is designed to mitigate these risks while building organic matter. The "Sinclair" naming convention suggests this project is likely part of a larger aggregation of landholdings managed by the same family entity, a common structure in Agriprove’s portfolio to maximize scale.
