Sinclair Carbon Project 1

Project Information:

Sinclair Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 15 kilometers northwest of Bordertown in the Tatiara District of South Australia. Registered in July 2024, the project covers 255 hectares of agricultural land in a region locally celebrated as the "Tatiara," an Aboriginal word meaning "Good Country," known for its reliable cropping and livestock production.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which involves implementing new land management activities to increase Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) levels. Specific activities for this project include the application of synthetic or non-synthetic nutrients to address soil deficiencies, the retention of crop stubble, and a conversion to reduced or no-tillage farming practices. These changes are designed to improve soil structure and fertility while sequestering carbon from the atmosphere.

The environment in this part of South Australia is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 460mm, falling predominantly in winter. The soils in the region are typically sandy loams over clay or limestone (Calcarosols), which can be prone to water repellence or acidity; the project's focus on nutrient application likely targets these specific soil health constraints. Interestingly, the registration of "Sinclair Carbon Project 1" alongside other similarly named projects (such as Sinclair Carbon Project 5) suggests a large-scale adoption of carbon farming by a prominent local agricultural enterprise, breaking their holdings into distinct project areas.
