Hasluck Carbon Project 1

Project Information:

Hasluck Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon project located in the Tatiara district, approximately 15km north-east of Bordertown in South Australia. It was registered in October 2022 and covers an area of roughly 206 hectares.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon (Measurement and Models) methodology. This framework rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through changes in agricultural management. For this specific project, activities involve applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies and retaining crop stubble to improve soil health and sequester carbon.

The Tatiara region is a significant agricultural hub, widely recognized for mixed dryland cropping and grazing, including wool, prime lambs, and beef cattle. The area typically experiences a medium rainfall of approximately 475mm to 500mm annually. The local landscape is characterized by gently undulating clay plains, with soil types predominantly consisting of grey and brown cracking clays or sandy loams over dispersive red clay, often featuring "gilgai" or crabhole depressions.

This project aims to demonstrate how targeted nutrient management and residue retention can enhance soil carbon stocks in a mixed farming system, contributing to both climate mitigation and improved land productivity.
