Adermann Carbon Project 2

Project Information:

Adermann Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 5km north of Bordertown in the Tatiara region of South Australia. Registered in January 2024, the project covers a project area of roughly 138 hectares. The Tatiara district, often referred to as "Good Country" in local Indigenous language, is a productive agricultural region primarily utilised for mixed farming, including winter cropping (wheat, barley, canola) and livestock grazing.

The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology (2021). This method rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through changes in land management. Adermann Carbon Project 2 specifically focuses on improving soil health and increasing agricultural productivity by applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material nutrient deficiencies and retaining crop stubble after harvest. These activities are designed to boost plant growth and biomass return to the soil, thereby sequestering carbon.

The local environment in the Tatiara district is characterised by a Mediterranean climate with winter-dominant rainfall, averaging between 400mm and 525mm annually. The soils in this region vary but frequently feature sandy topsoils over clay subsoils (duplex soils) or deep siliceous sands, which can have low inherent fertility and are prone to water repellence. The project's focus on nutrient application suggests a strategy to overcome these natural soil limitations. Notably, this is the second project registered under the "Adermann" name, following Adermann Carbon Project 1, suggesting a staged rollout across the proponent's landholdings.
